Why should business owners care about slip and fall risk?
Injuries are way more frequent and severe than you may think
Falls are the #1 cause of emergency room visits in the United Sates, with slip and falls accounting for over 1 million hospital trips annually. When is comes to persons over the age of 65, one of every three seniors will experience a fall, half of which will be repeat fallers. In totality, slips, trips and falls resulted in 46,653 deaths in occupational and non-occupational settings in 2022.
Employees are at increased risk
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 865 work-related deaths occurred in 2022 due to slips, trips and falls, 144 of which were workers slipping on the same level. In the food service industry in particular, employees are 3x more likely than guests to be injured by slip and fall.
Accidents are incredibly costly
Workers compensation claims encompass both direct costs such as medical services and rehabilitation, and indirect costs such as lost wages and productivity. Slipping accounts for 85% of worker's compensation claims and 65% of lost workdays, costing employers approximately $70 billion annually. The average case costs $51,047, of which $22,925 is indemnity allocation. However, severe injury cases can well exceed $100,000.
Flooring is often to blame
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, flooring materials contribute directly to more than 2 million fall injuries each year.
